Maddalena Ledezma: Hey y’all, so with the PALS drive coming up we were wondering, what is PALS, what are your goals and mission? Phoebe Lee: PALS is Progressive Action at Lincoln School. And our mission is really just to get the Lincoln community involved in the greater Providence, Rhode Island community - volunteering and gathering supplies for those in need. We have multiple things in the works for the year. So we’re focusing on the drive this month. Grace D’Ovidio: We're trying to do a different community goal each month. So this month it was the drive for Dorcas, because African refugees will be arriving in Rhode Island and have been arriving. Then next month, as it's Thanksgiving season, we're going to be doing some things inside and outside of school. An example of something we'll be doing outside of school is working with a biking group in Providence called bike jam PVD where you can bike through Providence and go on a scavenger hunt. And the scavenger hunt gathers supplies for homeless shelters. Phoebe Lee: Things like food, toiletries, and baby supplies. We also might be teaming up with my brother's keeper too, and that's an organization in Massachusetts. We have a bunch of ideas, and we're also open to ideas. So if you know of anything that's going on, then let us know! Maddalena Ledezma: Great, and we were wondering what the upcoming PALS drive is supporting? What is the Dorcas organization and how are they helping Afghan refugees in Rhode Island? Phoebe Lee: So it's called Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island, and they provide legal help and representation. They focus on refugees and immigrants, but they also just provide assistance for people who need help. They provide programs, organize drives like the one we're doing, they help with education and they help with finding housing too. So they really do a whole array of things. Their mission is to “empower individuals and families, especially immigrants, refugees, and the underserved to become self-sufficient and fully participating in our diverse community through innovative programs and advocacy that promote education training and cultural understanding”. Martha Savage: Thanks, and lastly what is this drive specifically looking to collect? Grace D’Ovidio: So Dorcas is asking for kitchen and cleaning supplies. Things like tupperware, dish rags, kitchen utensils, Clorox wipes, sanitizing spray, sponges, also kitchen supplies like pots and pans. Generally objects you can find in your kitchen, and really anything helps. Phoebe Lee: Last year we actually had good turnout for our teen parent drive, and it was just a collection of small items from lots of people. And it ended up being really successful! So we're aiming for that this year. And the boxes to donate are outside of the front desk, in the upper school lounge outside of the lunch room. We're going to have one next to miss Lambert's room, next to the basement bathroom, and then one in the middle school. Maddalena & Martha: Solid, thank you for your time!
